Application of Photo Luminescent Pigment to Paint and Ink

The pigment can be mixed with varieties of transparent resins and binders to produce into luminous paints and inks. The binders should be neutral or alkaline, as transparent as possible and preferably colorless. Heavy metal additives must not be used. And these resins are acrylic resin, PU resins poly acylamonia resins, amino resin, poly vinyl-alcohol Butyl aldehyde resins ,poly acylamonia resin, etc. , dissolve above mentioned resins with suitable solvent, add luminous pigment into solution, add suitable anti-deposition agent, erasing foam agent, and dispersion agent, then mix to even with stirrer with high speed. But don’t mill by use of three rollers machine to avoid to damage the luminous pigment. If use the sand grinder, the milling time must be shorten as possible, the aim is to disperse the pigment. Apply a white base coat under the photo luminescent layer to improve afterglow. Using 15-50% pigment. Minimum thickness of the layer should be 100 um. In order to achieve maximum afterglow, the thickness of 130-150 um is required. For achieving this thickness , two passes may be necessary. The screen net should be 115-175 um for getting the best effects with the luminescent inks.

Detailed directions for manufacture:

  1. Choose transparent, neutral or weak acid organic resins like polyurethane resin, acrylic acid resin, epoxy resin, polyester resin, etc..
  2. For painting purposes, particle size of pigments can be between 10~15 um or 20~40 um is recommended.
  3. Mix about 20 to 50% of luminous pigment, measured by weight, to the clear resin. This is just a guideline. You could add more or less according to your requirements
  4. Mixing ration for UV light sensitive powders is only 15 to 25%, measured by weight, to the clear resin.
  5. Grind the photo luminescent pigment by high-speed-dispersion or ball-grinding method in enamel-lined facility, you’d better not grind it in metal facility to avoid polluting the pigment.
  6. Use containers with ceramic or glass interiors and stir the mixture at high speed
  7. To avoid deposits, you should use high viscosity resins or anti-settling agents. Stir well prior to application, process small batches at a time.
  8. Do not use heavy metal components as additives.
  9. Use a white or light color as a background for best results. Any color other than white will diminish glow.
  10. Use clear varnish on the surface to strengthen the smooth finish and weather-resistance nature
  11. Strontium based pigments should only be mixed into oil/solvent bases. If your project requires a water based medium, then you need to purchase one of our pigments that are treated for water protection.
